My most recent
idea is requiring me to bring a wood lathe back into the schools.
I recently joined the American Association of Woodturners, and
applied for and received an Educational Grant. The AAW
established the grant to help expand woodturning by awarding money
to woodturners to help expand and share woodturning. The Grant
is allowing me to purchase a portable lathe to bring into an Art
class, and demonstrate woodturning.
As of the end of May,
I have demonstrated to over 100 kids, over the period of 4 periods at L.D. Bell High school,
and at Central Junior High.
It is amazing that out of 100, only
about 3 kids had ever seen a lathe.
Since the school year is over, I will
begin again next year. But over the summer I will be looking
for people to mentor and still stay active in the club.
